An American college student on holiday in India, Rafael fell afoul of a Rakshasa, an old and very powerful tiger-demon. When he finally manages to escape from his captivity, he is left with two small problems; the first is that he is now a Rakshasa himself, the second is that India is deporting him.
So just where can a shape-shifting tiger-demon find acceptance in America?
Las Vegas of course. But before he can claim his territory, there are a few small problems he'll have to clean up, like a fifty year old vampire infestation that the church and the government have been failing to control for years.
Then there is the problem of finding enough raw emotions to feed his powers, most Rakshasa feed off of hate and anger, but Rafael is an American and is far more obsessed with sex, love, and other, more positive feelings. Things which are easily found in 'Sin City'. But when he discovers that performing onstage works so much better, well there's only one thing for a shape-shifting monster to do, and that's to become the King of Las Vegas.
Spoiler Alert / Warning This story contains some scenes of a sexual nature. If your bothered by such things and can't just skip by them (or even the hint of them) please go buy someone else's book. Note that one of those scenes (as well as hinted at scenes) are of a same sex nature.

A Rakshasa! Awesome. I don't think I've ever seen a book with a rakshasa as a protagonist. That isn't why it gets 4 stars though. If you like John Van Stry then you will love this. If you DO NOT like the Portals series, you will most likely want this book as it's totally different. The very concept is great, a rakshasa has to be "relocated" and chooses Las Vegas. He has money, he's a rakshasa and he's in Las Vegas. Let the festivities begin.
The protagonist is someone who you can wrap your head around as an individual. You can empathize with him and love the options that he has that some of us would love to have as well. The book tells a great story but never takes itself too seriously but also maintains that balance of not getting too light either.
Sex IS in the book so if that bothers you, then stay away. Otherwise buy the book, put your seatbelt on and take off. It has a nice pace and keeps you engrossed.

The King of Las Vegas edition by John Van Stry Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed this urban fantasy with good characters that are believable and very human. Loved the main characters quandaries and his solutions to being a supernatural predator while retaining much of his humanity. Certainly hoping their will be a second book in the series.
Interesting and compellingly enjoyable story, but certainly not for the under 18 crowd. The author did a good job with it, but would appreciate to have the story of how Rafael became a Rakshasa.
Liked the book. Man turned into a demon, trying to stay human, is not a new theme. The protagonist is powerful, but he makes mistakes that get others into trouble and he is struggling with himself but not in an overly dramatic fashion. In other words, it is a good nicely paced story, perfect while commuting in the train. Certainly one of Van Stry's better stories.
I had previously read the "Portals of Infinity" series so I thought I'd try this book.
Good start, above average middle, great ending. I like the idea of a "good" monster, and it was interesting to see how the author moved it along and allowed the main character some growth.
Interesting that everybody seems to pick on vampires as the ultimate bad monster, but it worked and the book progressed well.
All in all, a good book worth the time spent reading.
The King of Law Vegas by John Van Stry is about a Rakshasa that moves to Las Vegas; becomes an Elvis Impersonator and battles vampires along the way. Now when I heard that description, I pictured a Tiger in a sequin suit singing “Suspicious Minds”.
The book is not quite that, but it is very enjoyable. Rafael was an American college student backpacking through India when captured by Rakshasa and changed into one. 11 years later, he escapes and is rescued by a Vatican monster fighting agency. Rafael is subsequently sent back to the United States and ends up in Las Vegas. As Rakshasas are very territorial, Rafael begins to mark his territory which results in him coming into conflict with the vampires (it is a nice touch that the lead Vamp is named Sunny) that secretly rule the City. He also meets Janet, a chef from LA in Sin City for the weekend.
The book is fast paced. Perhaps a little too fast paced. It would have been nice to have more build up between Rafael and Sonny. And the relationship between Rafael and Janet feels a little compressed.
This book is apparently a prequel to Van Stry’s previous novel, the Hammer Commission, but you don’t need to have read to enjoy this book (I haven’t read the first book).
This is an enjoyable novel. Mr Van Stry moves the plot right along. Rafael gets kidnapped by a rakshasa and turned into one, then escapes and ends up in Las Vegas. Then the fun begins as he discovers that organized crime is being run by vampires. So he becomes an Elvis impersonator to take over the town. Does that plot seem off beat and unlikely? The author makes it all seem logical and inevitable.
I'd read the author's "Portals of Inifinity" series and enjoyed them so when I saw a new book out I thought I'd take a chance even though this is a total different sub-genre. It was well worth it and I'll be reading the prequel now as well. Maybe next time I'll figure out that the new book is not the first, but the good news is that this book stands alone just fine so you don't need to have read the other first. The story has some interesting parallels with Correia's Monster Hunter series but without quite the over-arching "end of the universe" parts. Its a fun read and laugh out loud funny in a couple of spots - though that may just be my warped sense of humor
