The Trelew massacre is one of the founding episodes of modern Argentina and Latin America. It was a moment when it was not at all clear for the public opinion who the good and the bad guys were. In 1972 a partially successful escape attempt (6 leaders succeeded to escape in a hijacked plane to Chile) from the penal installation in Trelew (a small town in the south of Argentina, in the middle of the Patagonian plains), 19 guerrilla fighters were captured and arrested in a local nava military installation. After a couple of weeks they were brutally massacred, 15 of them died at the spot, one died a couples of days later due to the injuries and three survived to tell the story. A wave of solidarity developed in the city and the military dictator Lanusse proceeded to arrest several workers and community leaders afterward, an action that only increased the revolt.Tomas Eloy Martinez was a young journalist! that covered the events almost at the spot. He traveled there and came to meet the main characters involved on the civilian part of the episode. The book shows exactly this. It is not a literary masterpiece, but it is fresh, first handed and quite objective in capturing the mood of that complicated moment. It is now reedited (was censored for many years) with an added on epilogue about what happened with the ones involved, the unfolding of their lives and also the judicial procedures which were still open in Argentina by 2007 to investigate what really succeeded in that evening.
A must read for everyone interested in modern Latin American history.
